Jobs in the engineering industries are well known for being predominantly occupied by men, with the oil and gas sector specifically no exception. The lack of women is a real problem. A lot of females might not have given it any thought and won’t be certain of all the available roles within the sector.
This generally means that, by the time they graduate from college, they have already decided on another career path – and engineering has been ruled out. It isn’t something you can do without a relevant degree earned through years of study.
Therefore, the best way to attract women to the industry is by encouraging and trying to appeal to them from an earlier age – i.e. those that are still in high school. These measures seem to be working – more and more women are being employed by oil and gas companies, and not just in basic office roles.
Industry giant BP recently conducted its yearly Diversity and Inclusion report that analysed women in oil and gas, and how people currently in the sector see the future shaping up. Unsurprisingly, 72% of professionals agreed that engineering is male-dominated.
Most Believe the Number of Women Will Increase
A total of 62% of those surveyed think that there will be an increase in less experienced females in the field, with only 7% claiming that the number will go down. That figure decreases, however, when it comes to the more experienced individuals. Only 48% think the number of women with 16+ years of experience will go up.
The evidence seems to back up the claim that the future looks bright. According to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, women filled one third of oil and natural gas jobs that were available in the first quarter of 2013. 185,000 more females are expected to be hired in the industry by 2013, HIS Global reports.
In addition, there are studies that show not only will women have a more prominent role in the sector, but they will have more opportunities to go for skilled white-collar jobs, such as petroleum engineers. The number of accessible management jobs is also expected to rise.
Jobs Will Need Filling
While the current state of the industry in this regard is cause for concern, the future does look good for females within Oil and Gas Engineering. Many workers who have been in the industry for a long time will be retiring over the next few years, and as a result there will be opportunities for new talent as those jobs will need to be filled. Skilled women will have the chance to impress employers and begin a long and successful career in engineering.
