Some people assume that you can just walk straight into a bar job without any experience or skills. But, like most jobs, nothing could get further from the truth! It takes a skilled and sociable person to do bar work and do their job in an efficient manner.
If you think that working behind the bar of a club is “easy” and that you spend your time drinking beer, think again! As a bar worker, you have a lot of responsibilities.
As you’re still reading this, I will assume that you’ve got no problems with that, and you want to find out more. Keep reading, and I’ll share with you the secrets to getting bar work:
Get some unpaid experience under your belt
The first thing to do is learn first-hand what it’s like to work behind the bar of an establishment. One of the best ways to do that is by asking for an evening of unpaid work. That way, you can “learn the ropes” and find out if it’s for you or not.
It’s also a good thing to write about on your resume. That’s because it shows a willingness to learn more about the art of bartending.
Learn more about what it’s all about
Aside from a brief stint at unpaid bar work, you’ll need to know what your role will entail if you get hired someplace. Your primary duties are as follows:
- Serve customers and collect payment;
- Provide packaged snacks from behind the bar; and
- Create cocktails, especially for theme nights.
There are also some less-glamorous parts of the job too. For instance, you’ll need to wash and dry glasses. You’ll also have to collect the “empties” from the bar and tables. And you’ll need to clean your bar and the tables too.
One thing that you will sometimes need to deal with is rowdy customers. When people get drunk, it can sometimes make them do or say stupid things. Your job is to help diffuse any potential situations. For example, you might have to ask customers to leave if they’ve had too much to drink.
It also goes without saying that you must offer a friendly and welcoming atmosphere.
Get an RSA
In some parts of the world, you will need to get an RSA. In case you wondered, it stands for “Responsible Service of Alcohol.” The RSA refers to a certification that proves you have the skills to be a responsible bartender.
You can get an RSA online, or you could complete a course in an offline setting. Even if an RSA isn’t mandatory where you are, it’s still a worthy investment.
Write a kick-ass resume
The last thing you should do is make sure your resume is up to scratch. Employers will just chuck it away if it’s full of spelling and grammar mistakes. And if it’s an epic read, they will file it under “T” for “Trash”!
There are plenty of websites that can show you how to write a decent resume. Well, I hope this blog post has helped you today. Thanks for reading it!
