Women in the Oil and Gas Engineering Industry

Women in the Oil and Gas Engineering IndustryJobs in the engineering industries are well known for being predominantly occupied by men, with the oil and gas sector specifically no exception. The lack of women is a real problem. A lot of females might not have given it any thought and won’t be certain of all the available roles within the sector.

This generally means that, by the time they graduate from college, they have already decided on another career path – and engineering has been ruled out. It isn’t something you can do without a relevant degree earned through years of study.

Therefore, the best way to attract women to the industry is by encouraging and trying to appeal to them from an earlier age – i.e. those that are still in high school. These measures seem to be working – more and more women are being employed by oil and gas companies, and not just in basic office roles.

Industry giant BP recently conducted its yearly Diversity and Inclusion report that analysed women in oil and gas, and how people currently in the sector see the future shaping up. Unsurprisingly, 72% of professionals agreed that engineering is male-dominated.

Most Believe the Number of Women Will Increase

A total of 62% of those surveyed think that there will be an increase in less experienced females in the field, with only 7% claiming that the number will go down. That figure decreases, however, when it comes to the more experienced individuals. Only 48% think the number of women with 16+ years of experience will go up.

The evidence seems to back up the claim that the future looks bright. According to the US Bureau of Labour Statistics, women filled one third of oil and natural gas jobs that were available in the first quarter of 2013. 185,000 more females are expected to be hired in the industry by 2013, HIS Global reports.

In addition, there are studies that show not only will women have a more prominent role in the sector, but they will have more opportunities to go for skilled white-collar jobs, such as petroleum engineers. The number of accessible management jobs is also expected to rise.

Jobs Will Need Filling

While the current state of the industry in this regard is cause for concern, the future does look good for females within Oil and Gas Engineering. Many workers who have been in the industry for a long time will be retiring over the next few years, and as a result there will be opportunities for new talent as those jobs will need to be filled. Skilled women will have the chance to impress employers and begin a long and successful career in engineering.

Effective organisation is a must in busy homes. By planning your days, you can help ensure you don’t forget important things. Mapping out your daily activities in detail will able you to manage your time better.

If you don’t specifically set aside time to spend relaxing and having fun with your family, you risk drifting apart from them. You might also miss out on precious moments with your loved ones. So that you don’t fall into this trap, make sure you designate certain slots to be with your family.

For example, switch off your emails for a couple of hours each evening so you can catch up with the kids and devote your full attention to them. Also, spend some time at the weekends trying new activities and visiting different places with your family. It’s also a good idea to get a babysitter from time to time so that you can enjoy a date night with your other half.

Do You Have What it Takes to Turn Acting into a Career?

8094737104_41f7eaa90d_zTim Green

If you have a flare for the dramatic and love everything from soap operas to stage operas, you might have considered becoming an actor. People often think of actors as being high-profile celebrities, but there are many ways you can act as a career. Acting doesn’t have to be all about Hollywood movies or being on TV every day. Many people act as a full-time career without being a household name. They do this not through lack of talent but because of the acting they choose to do. If you want to be an actor, you need to think about what sort of acting you want to do and whether you want it to be your main job. A lot of people act as a sideline, either through necessity or because they’re content to save it as a hobby and source of extra income.

Qualifications and Experience

Actors aren’t usually required to have any qualifications, even across different areas. It’s experience that’s the most important, and being able to show your skills in showreels and auditions. However, attending stage school or gaining drama qualifications can help by helping you to hone your craft. Stage school is especially helpful. You can form important contacts and have a shot at some great opportunities. Places are very difficult to come by, however and only suitable for people who come to acting earlier in life. Adults who are interested in acting often get involved through amateur theatre or perhaps doing some extra work.

Extra Work

Do you enjoy the thought of being on camera and getting a chance to meet big stars, but don’t need to be directly in the spotlight? You might enjoy working as an extra. Extras are the people who provide background bodies for scenes in TV and films. They might have a line or two on occasion, but often they stand or walk around, making sure a scene doesn’t look devoid of life. It’s possible to do extra work as a full-time career, though many people do it as a casual job. Usually, it involves working as a freelancer. You sign up with one or more agencies that provide extras, who will contact you if they have a job for you. If you can make yourself stand out from the crowd, extra work could lead to some important contracts and bigger roles.

Representation and Auditions

If you want to go for some more serious acting roles, it’s a good idea to find yourself an agent. With some acting experience under your belt, your agent can help you to get auditions. You need to be able to showcase your abilities. You should have a showreel and headshots at the very least. Although they don’t have to be from a Los Angeles headshot photographer.

Whether you want to act in theatre, movies, TV or even radio, remember that an acting career doesn’t happen overnight. It could take years to build and you’re likely to be doing it on the side for a while. If you can, start while you’re young, so you have longer to learn the tricks of the trade.

How to Get a Job in a Church

If you feel strongly about god and feel interested in working for the church, then there are a few ways you can go about getting a job. Much of your work for the church will be selfless with no reward. As you are spreading the word of god and teaching religion to other people, you should be pleased that you are able to do this every day. Many churches are crying out for people to work for them, as the number of young people wanting a job there is decreasing. This guide will help you to get a job in a church:

Volunteer

The first thing you can do without having any qualifications is volunteer. Providing you feel strongly about religion and want to spread the word to other people, you should be accepted. You may volunteer to give out leaflets, take donations, or something else altogether. This is a very selfless way to get involved with the church as you won’t be paid. You will feel a great sense of satisfaction doing this.

Do Religious Studies

If you want a paid job in the church, you should do religious studies. The earlier you start, the better. Learn about different religions and respect them, but remain true to your own. Get as many relevant qualifications as you can. You may also want to do work and research at home, using tools such as spiritual gifts inventory by PeopleKeys, for example.

Train in the Department of Pastoral Training

If you want to be a pastor in the church, you must train in the department of pastoral training. You will then get the qualifications you need to lead church services and speak in front of a congregation.

Get Ordained

Once you have the knowledge, you need to get ordained. You will then be suitable to perform ceremonies of all kinds in the church.

Become a Local Preacher

If you don’t want to become a pastor, but you would like to spread the word of god, you can always become a local preacher. You will spread the word of god in public this way, to anybody who will listen. You may also hand out booklets and leaflets.

Check Specialist Church Websites

There are special websites online that concentrate on jobs in churches. Search those to see if any of them are suitable for you.

Search Job Websites

Regular job websites can have church vacancies on them too. Check every website you find to see if there are any suitable jobs. If you feel that working in a church is your calling and there are no vacancies in your area, you may want to travel or move for work.

Negotiate Terms of Employment

When you have a job in the church, you may be able to negotiate your terms of employment. This may include hours and pay. You won’t get paid much, but you will get a lot of job satisfaction from spreading the word of god and doing what you love.

There are many other jobs available to you if you decide that the church isn’t the right environment for you. Good luck!

Top Tips on Beginning Your Dream Career as a Midwife

Working as a midwife can be an amazing thing. Midwives help pregnant women through the entire process of pregnancy, from early on right up to the delivery. They provide care for the mother and the baby. Not only does a midwife help to deliver the child and give both parent and child care, they help to guide them through the experience emotionally. It can be a very rewarding, emotional job. If you want to make a difference, there’s no better career than midwifery! Here are some tips so you can start reaching your career goals:

Know Your Role

If you’re set on becoming a midwife, it’s essential you know your role inside out. You will have the following responsibilities if you’re lucky enough to get a job:

  • Look at the health of the mother and her unborn child all throughout the pregnancy.

  • Give advice to the mother on how to look after herself and the baby.

  • Talk to the mother about her options when it comes to delivery, and help her to feel confident in the decisions she makes.

  • Help the mother and the child through the labour and delivery wearing your best scrubs brand.

Different states vary on what they actually let midwives do, so you need to be aware of the particular rules for your state. Some states don’t let midwives practice at all – shocking, but true.

Getting the Experience

If you’ve decided that this career is for you, you need the right experience. Start off by getting a bachelor’s degree, then an undergraduate degree. You’ll need knowledge and qualifications in the following things:

You’ll also need to work with midwives to get experience, so try to secure yourself an internship, or try volunteering. You may also like to speak to midwives and ask them what steps they took to become successful.

When you’ve done all of the above, it’s time to apply to a midwifery graduate program. Each one will be different, so you’ll need to find a program that’s perfect for you. Most of the midwives working in the US today are Certified Nurse Midwives, as they are allowed to practice in all 50 states. You can become a midwife without being a nurse, but you’ll be limited to where you can work and what you can do.

Read plenty of books on this career and make sure your passion shines through. Your personality should match that of a successful midwife.

Afterwards, it’s time to pass the national certifying exam, given by the AMCB. You must pass this in most countries to practice midwifery properly.

Secure a Job

When you have all of the experience and qualifications necessary, you can carry out a job hunt. Apply at hospitals, clinics, and birthing centres. If you have the ambition, you may even want to set up your own private practice.

If this sounds too much for you but you’d love to work in the medical industry, you do have more options without the amount of qualifications. Check them out here. Thanks for reading!
